What we know about driving out of Gilgit.
Leave for Skardu before six. The road along the Indus is slow and you want the light for the narrow sections past Jaglot. Afternoon departures arrive after dark, which we will do but do not recommend.
For Hunza, the KKH is paved the whole way and stays open through winter in most years. Attabad tunnels have removed the old boat crossing entirely.
